Rita Barros *

My work lies on the borders between a documentary and a self-reflexive approach. Starting from a strictly subjective point of view, I have looked upon realities and subjects such as the daily life at the mythical Chelsea Hotel, the September 11 attacks, the self -portrait or the moment within the photographic image. These images I am submitting are p art of the project: Room 1008: The Last Days. In 2011 the Chelsea Hotel in New York where I have been living for the past 32 years was bought by developers who started targeting the tenants in order to empty the building. This series started after I had moved my photo archives into storage and I felt the need to safeguard also my loved objects. I photographed everything and decided to live with its copies. By living with them they became the ‘real objects’. And since they took the energy of the space and time I decided to document this new phase in my fight to keep my home still a home.
